If your external hard drive already has files on it, the formatting process will erase EVERYTHING. A FAT32 file system is limited to a 4 GB file size, so if you have large media files you want to use with the gaming systems, you will have to break them up into two separate files in order to get them to play. I’ve done this for two different manufacturers’ products now and the process is simple once you have the right tools, just follow the instructions carefully and MAKE ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN you are formatting the hard drive, NOT the computer. If you have a Seagate or Maxtor drive, for example, go to downloads and choose DiscWizard. Instead, you will have to check the manufacturer of your hard drive and go directly to the manufacturer’s website to download the specific utility you need. To have an external hard drive show up on either an XBox 360 or Playstation 3, you need to change the NTFS format to FAT32, and Windows’ formatting tool will not give you that option. You may have also noticed that right-clicking on a device in the file explorer gives you options to ‘format,’ but you won’t be able to use that utility here either. ![]() You might think that since Microsoft makes Windows and XBox, it would be compatible with either, but unfortunately that’s not the case. Whenever you get a new external hard drive, it’s usually formatted as NTFS for use with Windows devices.
